Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Gaithersburg Highlights Individuals Making a Difference

“Hispanic Americans:  Diversity, Integrity and Honor – One American Spirit” is the theme of the 2011 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in the City of Gaithersburg, hosted by the City’s Multicultural Affairs Committee.  The celebration will take place on Monday, October 3, 2011 from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the second floor Gallery at Gaithersburg City Hall, 31 South Summit Avenue.  The reception will include recognition of the impressive and selfless contributions of Sisters Carmen Banegas and Amaya Duralde, who have supported the Hispanic community for years.  There will also be refreshments and cultural entertainment provided by the Sabor Latino dance group from Gaithersburg High School.
Immediately following the reception, an official proclamation will be issued at the Mayor and City Council meeting, declaring September 15 to October 15, 2011 as Hispanic Heritage Month in the City of Gaithersburg.   The proclamation will be presented to Sisters Banegas and Duralde.  These two Carmelite nuns have dedicated their lives to social work, helping thousands of area residents at the Spanish Catholic Center - Langley Park since 1978.
