World of Montgomery Festival Kicks Off Community Service Week; Features Health Fair with Free Screenings
The World of Montgomery Festival will celebrate Montgomery County’s ethnic and cultural diversity on Sunday, October 16 from noon to 5 p.m. in downtown Wheaton. This free, outdoor event will also serve as the kick off event for Montgomery County Community Service Week and will feature a health fair with free screenings sponsored by the Latino Health Initiative. The festival will take place at the Wheaton Triangle, at the corner of Reedie Drive and Grandview Avenue, one block north of the Wheaton Metro Station.
At this year’s festival, attendees can participate in community service projects, as well as learn about and sign up for projects happening throughout the week around the County. The festival will also host the “Ama tu Vida/Love Your Life” health fair, sponsored by the Latino Health Initiative and will offer free and confidential health screenings.
As in years past, the festival will feature a variety of ethnic music and dance performances by local artists, including Lilo Gonzales (Salvadoran music), Anna Mwalangho (West African singer), Gamelan Wrhatnala USA (Indonesian dance) and The Bog Band (Irish music). The International Village, a hands-on cultural education area, will showcase performances, demonstrations and exhibits from a number of organizations including The Peace Corps, Ten Thousand Villages, Habitat for Humanity and Montgomery College Senegal Water Program. There will also be international food and craft vendors. Representatives of various County government agencies and community nonprofits will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about their services.
